Winter Péter Kaddish Photo: Winter Péter, 2004 BILDERBEUTEL:"Kaddish" is telling a series of prayers at the ancestors' graves at the "Yartzait" (date of death) or when important decisions (like marriage) are to be made. We chose this picture as picture of the year 2004 (nr. 1 of 3).

Substantiation

A man between stones, each of which stands for a human that once lived. The stones stand like people, and each is different. Through time the stones have inclined, some more, others less. The man there bethinks himself, remembers his origin as he looks to the future.
We chose the picture because it is a restraining, beautiful and unusual representation of humanity.

Substantiation

The "bodyness" is exaggerated by the well set image frame and in the same time the body itself veiled behind its over-presence. One needs to take a closer look to determine that the picture shows knees. The picture is more distressing than it should be. You see physiologically caused stains on the skin, tight skin, slacky folds of pergamentlike and dry, deficiently supplied skin, a half healed wound, bones. The photo shows human frailness and vulnerability, but it also reminds of a long, past life. The picture is grotesque and formally and contently excellent.

Substantiation

An expressive, touching and very contradictory portrait. An unspectacular photo. We chose it, because it seems to us to be the least superficial portrait in the collection. Through the medium (the picture) one looks into a face, and what you see will be similar but not identical to what others see. Through the face, the second medium, you look into the soul of this person, the way she is at that moment. Here too, what you see there will be similar but not the same to what others see.

the candidates

The preselection of the "candidates" took place in an objective way, that is by a database query: Show those 12 pictures of the year 2004 which 1. are best rated and 2. were clicked most, show them in this order.

Note: At later points in time than the end of 2004 the above row of candidates might change, because it is based on the mentioned database query and because the Bilderbeutel Collection is dynamic / variable.
It is possible that the "winners" do not appear in the candidates row anymore at some time.

the choice

We chose the pictures of the year from the candidates at our discretion. The main criterium was preeminent figurative qualities and qualities of content, but not technical quality of the pictures. We didn't select the "best" pictures, but pictures of commitment.

There are many pictures in the Bilderbeutel Collection which are "better", formally better. Furthermore, other persons would probably (like always) have decided differently. But these pictures are certainly excellent too and we wish to highlight them accordingly.

Partisanship did not play a role with the choice, although the affected partisan also had a word to say.
