Kaddish
Photo: Winter Péter, 2004
BILDERBEUTEL:"Kaddish" is telling a series of prayers at the ancestors' graves at the "Yartzait" (date of death) or when important decisions (like marriage) are to be made.
We chose this picture as picture of the year 2004 (nr. 1 of 3). |

Substantiation |
A man between stones, each of which stands for a
human that once lived. The stones stand like people, and each is different. Through
time the stones have inclined, some more, others less. The man there bethinks
himself, remembers his origin as he looks to the future.
We chose the picture because it is a restraining, beautiful and unusual representation
of humanity. |

| The "bodyness" is exaggerated by the well
set image frame and in the same time the body itself veiled behind its over-presence.
One needs to take a closer look to determine that the picture shows knees. The
picture is more distressing than it should be. You see physiologically caused
stains on the skin, tight skin, slacky folds of pergamentlike and dry, deficiently
supplied skin, a half healed wound, bones. The photo shows human frailness and
vulnerability, but it also reminds of a long, past life. The picture is grotesque
and formally and contently excellent. |

| An expressive, touching and very contradictory portrait.
An unspectacular photo. We chose it, because it seems to us to be the least superficial
portrait in the collection. Through the medium (the picture) one looks into a
face, and what you see will be similar but not identical to what others see. Through
the face, the second medium, you look into the soul of this person, the way she
is at that moment. Here too, what you see there will be similar but not the same
to what others see. |
